Easter is just around the corner, and if you’re like most homeowners, you’re probably starting to rack your brain for party ideas. There’s the usual lamb and eggs, but there’s also the crucial decision of what to serve for dessert. If you want something more special than cake or ice cream, try making fresh Easter cupcakes. Cupcakes are basically just smaller versions of cakes, so you get the same treats but in smaller, more manageable portions. And since they’re small, you can decorate them to suit the festive mood of your Easter party.
You don’t need to be a pro to do all that. Decorating cupcakes is actually one of the easiest things to do in the kitchen–in fact, you can even get your kids to help out! All you need is a batch of cupcakes, some frosting and toppings, and a little bit of creativity. Still not convinced? Here are some how-to tips to help you make the perfect Easter cupcakes for this year’s party.
Bunnies are one of the most visible symbols for Easter, and bunny cakes are naturally one of the most popular Easter desserts. And it’s really easy to recreate them with Easter bunny cupcakes. You can just arrange them into a bunny shape on your platter, but it’s more fun to make individual bunnies. It’s a lot easier than it sounds. Just spread some plain frosting over the cake (you can make your own or grab some from the bakeshop), and use candies and marshmallows for the eyes and ears.
If you’re not feeling too creative, you can also get ready-made bunny cake toppers instead. Most cake decorating stores sell cake toppers by the season, so it should be easy to find Easter designs. Just put a little sugar bunny or two on top of each cake, or sprinkle them over the whole batch. The kids are sure to love the designs, as well as the extra treat. Look for bunnies with lots of different colors–they’ll stand out better and make the cakes look more appetizing.
It’s not as popular as an Easter symbol, but it’s definitely just as cute! While the bunny is a symbol of fertility, the Easter chick represents new life and rebirth. And if you’re going for a cute, kid-friendly theme, these two make the perfect pair for your Easter cupcakes. Simply use yellow frosting to draw the chick on top of the cake, and some red or brown for the eyes and beak. You can also use jelly beans, nuts, or whatever toppings you have to give it more detail.
Chicken cake toppers also go well with Easter chick cupcakes. There are plastic and edible ones in most stores, so you can take your pick–although edible ones are more convenient as you don’t have to pull them out. Plastic toppers are more ideal if you’re planning on hosting more events in the future, as you can wash and reuse them after the party.
Easter egg cupcakes
Of course, no Easter party is complete without the good old Easter eggs. These colorful symbols are the highlight of every Easter table, and they’re pretty easy to recreate on cupcakes. Just pipe out your favorite patterns using different colors of frosting–you can do a traditional tribal theme or come up with your own design. Keep the colors from mixing up by using a different bag for each color, or working on one color at a time.
Alternatively, you can try making eggs in a nest—it’s a bit easier especially if you don’t have the steady hand for detailed patterns. All you need are some chocolate shavings or sticks for the twigs, and some egg-shaped Easter cake toppers candies (two or three for each cake is usually best). You can also get egg chocolate candies instead of toppers if you want a bit more flavor.
Since Easter is largely a religious holiday, you can’t go wrong with Christian-themed cupcake decorations. Candles, crosses, rosaries, and angels are some of the most common patterns. These are really easy to make, and even non-religious people will appreciate the intricate designs you can come up with. Spring flowers like daisies, violets, and lilies are also associated with Easter, so you can use them if you want something more colorful.
If you don’t have time or simply don’t feel like decorating, you can also use cake toppers. Most shops stock up on seasonal toppers, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find the right designs. Christian designs range from simple beads and praying hands to well-detailed images of churches, crucifixes, and praying children. Like other toppers, you can choose from plastic or edible, and even get an entire decorating set. Christian cake toppers also come in a wide range of colors, so it’s easy to match them with your choice of frosting.
