11 Super Tips for Hanging Wall Art Perfectly
Are you perfect? None of us is, but we oftentimes aim for perfection in our entire lives. We try to earn a perfect score on tests in school. We attempt to earn a perfect bowling score. We work towards perfect results when cooking, playing, computing, practicing, painting, writing, dancing, testing, gaming, and yodeling. Although we can never achieve complete perfection, it is reasonable for us to strive for it. We can be perfect or near perfect as often as possible.
Likewise, we might strive for perfection when creating decor for our home. For instance, we may attempt to create a perfect arrangement of wall decor, in a particular room. Of course, “perfect” is relative when creating decor. The process is not an exact science. However, an arrangement of wall art can provide us with a general impression about whether it is effective. Here are some tips to help you create a flawless wall art display:
1. Do more with less
When arranging wall decor on a wall, do not feel the need to cover every inch of space on the wall. In fact, strategically arranging a few pieces, such as abstract metal wall art, can be more effective than creating an arrangement that appears incomplete or reckless. Remember that, “Rome was not built in a day.” You may need some extra time to find the perfect piece for the perfect place on a wall. Take the time to arrange and rearrange wall decor pieces, until you determine the perfect display.
2. Evaluate groups of wall decor before hanging it
Regardless of which types of wall decor you decide to arrange on a wall, test how the groups will appear, by first laying them out on a table or the floor. This will allow you to assess the arrangement and then make any necessary adjustments.
3. Size matters
Consider size and height issues, when arranging various types of wall decor. You have various options in terms of the size of the wall decor that you use on a particular wall. For instance, make a big statement by using one huge item in a large space.
4. Color-coordinate the wall art
A group of wall decor, such as wall art, does not have to share a theme. You could group items by color. It is not necessary for the items to have the exact same colors. However, make sure to review how primary, secondary, and tertiary colors complement each other.
5. Be creative
Try thinking outside the box, when selecting wall decor items. Okay, in the case of display cases, it is okay to think inside the box–literally. However, feel free to be creative when selecting types of wall decor to include on your wall. Some ideas include baskets, dinner plates, frames (empty), game boards, hats, and maps. Consider flipping through decorating magazines, catalogs, and books for some innovative ideas.
6. Mix and match properly.
You should follow some basic rules when mixing and matching different pieces of wall decor. For instance, while the “rule of three” is not set in stone, you should certainly consider using it whenever possible. As a variation of this rule, group wall decor in odd-numbered groups. In addition, you should not scatter non-matching pieces around a room. Instead, try to group compatible pieces together, or match up an “oddball” piece of wall decor, with a furniture piece underneath it.
7. Create and hang your own art
Besides purchasing wall art, you could also create and then hang your own artwork, including canvas wall art. This would add a personal touch to the wall decor. Consider options such as boards coated with stainless steel, corkboards, boards with chalkboard paint, and shadowboxes. Personalize the artwork with your own photos and pictures.
8. Match up wall decor’s size and shape with corresponding wall space
This is a basic but also one of the most significant concepts when arranging wall decor. Match up vertical decor with vertical space, and horizontal decor with horizontal space. Additionally, use small decor for small spaces, and larger pieces for larger regions.
9. Place art above furniture correctly
The rule of thumb when placing wall art above a piece of furniture, is that the length of the wall art should never be greater than the width of the furniture piece over which it is placed. To be more exact, the furniture’s width should be approximately wider than the wall decor.
10. Height matters
In terms of height, try to hang wall decor at a uniform height around the entire room. Here is a method for doing a spot-check. Stand in the middle of the room and gradually turn your body. As you scan the wall decor on the wall (including metal wall art), do the focal points zigzag up and down, or do they progress smoothly across the wall? If the former is true, then you should consider making some necessary adjustments.
What is an ideal height for wall decor? One approach is to place the items three-fourths of the length from the floor, to the ceiling. Another approach is to place all wall decor at eye-level. Keep in mind that this height is relative. In a child’s room, the “eye-level” should be kid-sized. Another exception is when hanging wall art above a piece of furniture, such as a bookcase, mantel, or sofa. In that case, you have a wider expanse of wall in which to place the wall decor. However, avoid placing it in close proximity to the ceiling.
11. Maintain balance with groups of wall decor
You can use various methods to maintain balance. Place larger pieces below smaller pieces. The larger pieces will function as an anchor. To create more “weight,” flank a large piece with two smaller pieces. Keep experimenting until you are satisfied with the layout.
When arranging various wall art, such as decorative wall art, you have a seemingly unlimited number of options available. Positioning the perfect pieces in the perfect places, will require some perfect tactics.
